The Bud Billiken® Parade is more than a procession of bands and floats marching down King Drive, it’s a commemoration of our past and a celebration of our future. Every summer since 1929, “The Bud” has united African-Americans throughout the city of Chicago in music, dance, food, and laughter. The first Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic was held August 11, 1929. The parade route ran from 31st and Michigan Boulevard to Washington Park.

In 1923, Chicago Defender founder Robert S. Abbott and his managing editor, Lucius Harper, formed the Bud Billiken Club. Robert Abbott Sengstacke, the publisher and editor of the Chicago Defender, held the very first Bud Billiken Parade in 1929. "His goal was to provide underprivileged youth with a chance to be in The Bud Billiken Day Parade is an annual parade held since 1929 in Chicago. It is the largest African American parade in the country. Held annually on the second Saturday in August, the parade route travels on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive through the Bronzeville and Washington Park neighborhoods on the city’s south side. At the end of the parade, in the historic Washington public park, is a picnic and festival.
